TF1 has asked Ex Machina and Civolution to create a second screen application to illustrate the potential for big primetime shows like Danse Avec Les Stars

The Story

Civolution, an audio sync solution provider, and Ex Machina joined forces to create an application for TF1, France’s leading TV company. The application introduces the advanced, audio synchronized and social second screen experience to the French market.

Talent and celebrity shows like Dance avec les Stars (international title: Dancing with the Stars) lend themselves very well for second screen participation. You’ll get background information on the contestants and the judges, dynamically rate each performance and vote for your favorite couple at any time. All the time this is complemented by feedback you receive from facebook friends participating, and you can chat with them too. And during commercial breaks, you can interact with the brands as well.

A unique property of the app is that it implements Civolution’s audio watermark technology. The watermark technology makes the app automatically adjust for any delay in TV signal reception, it can detect a channel change and even allows you to play along if you watch the show the next day. Whatever the video source, the watermark stays present and the PlayToTV client can detect it and bring you back in sync in seconds.

The app was introduced at TF1′s Journees de l’Innovation in November 2011.
